Are Liquid cooled PCs better?

0

When it comes to building a high-performance computer, one of the most important considerations is how to cool it. Overheating can cause damage to your hardware and reduce the lifespan of your components, so choosing the right cooling system is crucial. In this article, we’ll take a look at the two most popular cooling methods – liquid-cooling and air-cooling – and determine which one is better.

Air-Cooled Computers

Air-cooled computers are the most common type of computer cooling system. They use fans to move air over the components, dissipating the heat generated by the computer. The fans draw in cool air from the surroundings and blow it over the hot components, such as the CPU and graphics card, to cool them down.

One of the main advantages of air-cooling is its simplicity. The fans are easy to install and require minimal maintenance. Additionally, air-cooling is relatively inexpensive and doesn’t require any additional hardware other than the fans themselves. It is also a reliable cooling solution that has been used in computers for many years.

However, air-cooling does have some drawbacks. It can be noisy, especially when using high-performance fans. Additionally, air-cooling is not as effective as liquid-cooling, particularly when it comes to cooling high-performance components. This can limit the overclocking potential of your system and reduce its overall performance.

Liquid-Cooled Computers

Liquid-cooled computers, on the other hand, use a liquid coolant to transfer heat away from the components. The coolant is circulated through a series of tubes and heat sinks, absorbing heat from the components and carrying it away to a radiator, where the heat is dissipated into the air.

The main advantage of liquid-cooling is its superior cooling performance. Liquid-cooling is much more efficient than air-cooling, particularly when it comes to cooling high-performance components such as CPUs and graphics cards. This allows you to achieve higher overclocks and boost your system’s performance.

Additionally, liquid-cooling is much quieter than air-cooling, as there are no fans to create noise. This makes it an ideal solution for those who value a quiet system. However, liquid-cooling does require more maintenance than air-cooling, as you need to regularly monitor the coolant levels and replace the coolant as needed.

Which is Better?

So, which is better – liquid-cooled or air-cooled computers? The answer depends on your needs and preferences. If you’re building a budget system or don’t plan on overclocking your components, air-cooling is a perfectly fine solution. It’s easy to install, reliable, and requires minimal maintenance.

However, if you’re building a high-performance system and want to push your components to their limits, liquid-cooling is the better choice. It provides superior cooling performance and allows you to achieve higher overclocks. Additionally, if you value a quiet system, liquid-cooling is much quieter than air-cooling.

Wrapping Up

In conclusion, both liquid-cooling and air-cooling have their advantages and disadvantages. If you’re building a budget system or don’t plan on overclocking your components, air-cooling is a perfectly fine solution. However, if you’re building a high-performance system and want to push your components to their limits, liquid-cooling is the better choice. Ultimately, the decision comes down to your needs, preferences, and budget.

What Happened to Microsoft Accessories Like Keyboards?

0

After many years and tens of thousands of words typed, my favorite Microsoft keyboard is now on its last leg. Unfortunately, when I recently went out to purchase a replacement, I was stunned to learn Microsoft discontinued its line of keyboards and accessories. While there are plenty of alternatives, I’ve found that Microsoft had some of the best options at a great price.

Why Are Microsoft Keyboards Out of Stock?

Microsoft’s keyboards are out of stock at retailers because Microsoft is no longer selling its own branded computer accessories.

When I first saw that Microsoft keyboards were out of stock, I assumed it was due to holiday demand. I checked my local Best Buy in late November, and many of their keyboards were out of stock.

After coming out of Best Buy empty-handed, I did a quick Amazon search and found a few available for insane prices. These were all from third parties, so I again assumed that Amazon was simply out of stock. Unfortunately, after returning home and doing a quick Google search, I learned their true fate.

Is Microsoft Discontinuing Keyboards?

Microsoft already discontinued its keyboard lineup. This means you won’t find the popular ergonomic keyboards and mice at local retailers or online. While there are some keyboards still floating around on sites like Amazon, they are grossly overpriced.

The truth is that keyboards and accessories never made up a significant share of Microsoft’s sales, so the company made the tough decision to shift the attention of the accessories division toward Surface accessories.

Is Microsoft no Longer Selling Accessories and Peripherals?

Microsoft no longer makes accessories such as keyboards, mice, and webcams. However, they are continuing to sell accessories for the Surface lineup. This includes mice and keyboards designed specifically for the Surface tablets.

Not only is this upsetting to many Microsoft keyboard fans, but it is also the end of an era. Microsoft notably made a wide range of PC accessories throughout the 1990s and early 2000s before eventually narrowing down its lineup to focus on mice and keyboards.

When Did Microsoft Discontinue its Keyboards and Accessories?

Microsoft announced its plans to discontinue keyboards and other peripherals back in April 2023. The keyboards and accessories slowly sold out at retailers, with some locations still carrying the products into the latter part of the year.

Once the news broke, many fans of the popular keyboards quickly ran out to buy as many as they could get their hands on. Writers, in particular, bought extra keyboards, fearing they could never find a suitable replacement.

What Is the Best Alternative to Microsoft’s Ergonomic Keyboard?

Your best option today is to visit a local store with keyboards on display. The most common alternative for Microsoft’s ergonomic keyboards is a Logitech. However, I’ve always found Logitech’s ergonomic offerings to be very bulky. Nonetheless, they are one of the few companies selling keyboards that are of decent quality.

Good News on the Horizon

Alas, there is some good news because Incase recently announced their plans to relaunch the Microsoft keyboard lineup. These devices will use the original designs and be branded as Incase Designed by Microsoft. The new line is supposed to launch in 2024, so all we can do in the meantime is hope that the quality and function remain the same.

  1. Wheel Size and Rotation: Racing wheels come in different sizes, ranging from compact to full-sized replicas of real racing wheels. Consider the available space and your personal preference when choosing the wheel size. Additionally, pay attention to the rotation range, as a wider rotation allows for more precise steering control.
  2. Force Feedback and Vibration: Force feedback is a crucial feature that simulates the resistance and vibrations experienced when driving a real car. Look for wheels with strong and accurate force feedback to feel the nuances of the road, such as bumps, curbs, and tire grip, enhancing your overall racing experience.
  3. Pedals and Pedal Resistance: The pedals are another essential part of a racing wheel setup. Check for pedals with progressive resistance, as this mimics the feel of actual brake and accelerator pedals. Some high-end models even offer a clutch pedal for manual gear shifting.
  4. Additional Features: Depending on your preferences, consider extra features like programmable buttons on the wheel, gear shifters, and compatibility with other accessories like handbrakes. These features can add convenience and versatility to your racing setup.

Considerations for Choosing a Racing Wheel

Choosing a video game racing wheel is not just about picking the most expensive or feature-packed option. It’s essential to align the wheel’s characteristics with your gaming setup, preferences, and budget. Here are some crucial considerations to take into account before making your final decision:

  • Platform Compatibility: Ensure that the racing wheel you choose is compatible with your gaming platform. Some wheels are designed specifically for PC gaming, while others work seamlessly with gaming consoles like PlayStation and Xbox. Double-check the compatibility to avoid any compatibility issues down the road.
  • Budget and Cost Range: Racing wheels come in a wide range of prices, from budget-friendly options to high-end models that may cost a small fortune. Set a budget that suits your financial situation and explore wheels within that range. Remember, even mid-range wheels can provide a fantastic experience without breaking the bank.
  • Realism and Immersion Preferences: Consider the level of realism and immersion you desire in your racing experience. If you’re a casual gamer seeking some fun on the tracks, a basic or mid-range wheel might be sufficient. However, if you crave a highly authentic experience and compete in sim racing leagues, investing in a high-end wheel with advanced features may be worth it.
  • Skill Level and Intended Use: Your gaming skill level and intended use of the racing wheel should also influence your decision. If you’re a beginner or occasional gamer, a basic or mid-range wheel should serve you well. On the other hand, seasoned sim racers or professional gamers may benefit from the precision and feedback offered by high-end racing wheels.
  • User Reviews and Recommendations: Before making a purchase, check online reviews and customer feedback for the racing wheels you’re considering. Real user experiences can provide valuable insights into the wheel’s performance, durability, and overall satisfaction level. Additionally, seek recommendations from experienced gamers or online communities dedicated to sim racing.
  • Trying Out and Testing Racing Wheels: Whenever possible, try out the racing wheels in person to get a feel for their handling and features. Visit gaming expos, electronics stores, or friends who own racing wheels to experience different models firsthand. If trying in person is not feasible, consider rental or borrowing options to test the wheel in your gaming environment.
  • Return Policies and Warranty: Check the return policies and warranty offered by the manufacturer or retailer. In case the racing wheel doesn’t meet your expectations or arrives with defects, a generous return policy or warranty can offer peace of mind.

Researching and Comparing Racing Wheels

Now that you have a clear idea of the considerations to keep in mind, it’s time to dive into the research phase. Here’s how you can efficiently research and compare different video game racing wheels to find the perfect match for your racing adventures:

  • Online Reviews and Ratings: Head to reliable online platforms and gaming communities to read reviews and ratings of various racing wheels. Pay attention to both the positive and negative feedback to get a comprehensive understanding of each product’s strengths and weaknesses.
  • Manufacturer Reputation and Customer Support: Look into the reputation of the manufacturers behind the racing wheels you’re considering. Brands with a track record of producing high-quality gaming peripherals and offering excellent customer support are more likely to deliver a satisfying experience.
  • Seek Recommendations from Experienced Gamers: Engage with sim racing communities, forums, and social media groups to seek recommendations from experienced gamers. Their insights and personal experiences can offer valuable guidance in your decision-making process.
  • Gaming Expos and Events: If possible, attend gaming expos, conventions, or events where you can try out different racing wheels and speak with representatives from various manufacturers. These events often provide hands-on experiences and opportunities to ask specific questions about the products.
  • Rental and Borrowing Options: To get a more extended experience with a specific racing wheel, consider rental services or borrowing options from friends or local gaming communities. Spending more time with the wheel in your gaming environment can give you a better feel for its performance and suitability.
  • Compare Technical Specifications: Compare the technical specifications of shortlisted racing wheels. Pay attention to factors like force feedback strength, rotation range, pedal sensitivity, and any additional features that matter most to you.
  • Consider Long-Term Usability and Upgrade Options: Evaluate the long-term usability of the racing wheel. Are there upgrade options available, such as interchangeable wheels or pedals? Choosing a wheel with potential for future upgrades can extend its lifespan and adaptability.

Part 5: Trying Out and Testing Racing Wheels

After conducting thorough research and narrowing down your options, it’s time to get hands-on with the racing wheels you’re considering. Trying out and testing the wheels will give you a better sense of their performance and comfort. Here are some methods to get a real feel for the racing wheels:

  • Gaming Expos and Stores with Demo Units: If you have the opportunity, visit gaming expos or electronics stores that have demo units available for testing. Take advantage of these setups to experience different racing wheels and see how they respond to your inputs.
  • Rental or Borrowing Options: Consider renting a racing wheel or borrowing one from friends or local gaming communities. Spending more time with the wheel in your own gaming environment will allow you to assess its compatibility and comfort for extended use.
  • Utilize Return Policies for Online Purchases: If you plan to purchase the racing wheel online, make sure to review the return policies of the retailer. Some sellers offer return windows during which you can try the product and return it if it doesn’t meet your expectations.
  • Check Ergonomics and Comfort: Pay attention to the ergonomics and comfort of the racing wheel. Ensure that the grip feels comfortable in your hands, and the overall design allows for extended gaming sessions without causing discomfort or fatigue.
  • Evaluate Wheel Feedback and Pedal Response: While testing the racing wheels, assess the force feedback and vibration to see if it matches your preference for realism and immersion. Similarly, test the pedal response to ensure they provide the right amount of resistance and sensitivity.
  • Consider Compatibility with Accessories: If you plan to expand your racing setup with additional accessories like gear shifters or handbrakes, verify the compatibility of the racing wheel with these add-ons.
  • Compare Overall Performance: Evaluate the overall performance of each racing wheel in terms of precision, responsiveness, and the level of control it offers. The wheel that delivers the most satisfying racing experience should be a strong contender.

By trying out and testing the racing wheels, you’ll gain invaluable firsthand experience that will help you make an informed decision based on your personal preferences and needs.

Making the Final Decision

Congratulations! You’ve researched, compared, and tested various racing wheels, and now it’s time to make the final decision. Choosing the perfect racing wheel for your gaming setup involves a combination of practical considerations and personal preferences. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you make the right choice:

  • Weigh the Pros and Cons: Review the pros and cons of each shortlisted racing wheel. Take into account their features, performance, price, and compatibility. Identify which factors are most important to you and which ones you can compromise on.
  • Prioritize Essential Features: Based on your gaming preferences and the type of racing experience you desire, prioritize the essential features you want in a racing wheel. Whether it’s precise force feedback, adjustable pedals, or platform compatibility, focus on the features that matter most to you.
  • Consider Long-Term Usability: Think about the long-term usability of the racing wheel. Will it meet your needs as your gaming skills evolve? Are there upgrade options available to enhance the wheel’s capabilities in the future?
  • Factor in Budget and Cost: Revisit your budget and consider the value each racing wheel provides for its price. Keep in mind that investing in a higher-end model may result in a more immersive experience and better durability.
  • Reflect on Your Testing Experience: Recall your hands-on experience with the racing wheels you tested. Consider which wheel felt the most comfortable, responsive, and enjoyable to use during your gaming sessions.
  • Seek Recommendations: If you’re still torn between a few options, seek recommendations from experienced gamers or friends who own the same racing wheels. Their insights can provide additional perspectives and help you finalize your decision.
  • Evaluate Long-Term Satisfaction: Picture yourself using the selected racing wheel in your gaming setup. Will it fulfill your expectations and provide long-term satisfaction in your racing adventures?

Remember that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to choosing a video game racing wheel. Each gamer’s preferences and needs vary, so trust your instincts and select the racing wheel that aligns best with your individual style of play.

Why Does My PC Crash When It’s Not Overheating?

0

If your computer keeps crashing, it can be incredibly frustrating. There are also several problems that can cause crashes to happen. If you have grown frustrated, take a break, as the worst thing you could do is get aggravated and worsen the problem.

A pc will crash when it experiences a failure of either components or software and is incapable of running correctly. If your pc is not overheating, then it may have a virus. Viruses can infect your computer, impede its usage, and cause it to crash. Another common problem is that your system is outdated; it is vital to run the latest operating system and ensure your drivers are up to date.

PC crashes can seem overwhelming and demoralizing, especially when it seems like there is no fix. However, below are some simple steps that you can try to help determine why your computer crashes and the ways to resolve them.

What to Do If Your Computer Keeps Crashing

You first must determine if you had made any changes before the crashing began. Changing out hardware such as ram or a hard drive may be the problem. However, a more common cause is problematic software. If you recently installed a new game or program on your computer, it could have corrupted the operating system and caused it to crash.

Updates can also cause similar problems, and if you have updated your computer, the new version may be causing a problem with your hardware or software. Remember when the crashing began, and write a list of things you have done since. After this, you can begin tracking down what is causing your pc to crash.

Check Your PC Usage

To get started, you will need to open your task manager by pressing alt, ctrl, del on your keyboard, which will bring up a page with security options where you will select task manager. This is one of the most useful tools for determining how well your computer runs.

Once your task manager is open, click on the button at the bottom to view more details. On this page is a row of metrics that has information on your PC’s usage. CPU and memory usage are two of the biggest reasons that your pc may crash. If your usage in one of these categories is getting into the 90% range, then there is either a problem with the hardware or you will need to upgrade it.

If your usage is low, go about your normal routine and keep an eye on the task manager. Try to notice if certain software you use causes a spike. If you experience a crash and nothing is elevated, then proceed to the next possibility.

Check Hard Drive Health

Traditional spinning hard drives have a limited lifespan, but some do fail slowly and prematurely. One easy way to check your hard drive’s health is to open your computer’s command prompt by searching for it on your taskbar. Once the command prompt opens, type CHKDSK to run the computer’s built-in disk check.

Another option is to run the Windows hard drive defragment tool, which will clean up your hard drive and should find any problematic areas. If your hard drive is failing, it is important to back up your data immediately to prevent loss and then purchase a replacement drive. If your hard drive is not the problem, keep reading to see the next possible issue.

Check for Updates

A common cause of computer crashes and failures is simply a lack of updating. Some people fear that updating their computer will cause it to crash, but not doing so can also cause problems. Therefore, the most important reason to keep your pc updated is for security.

When Windows, or any operating system, updates, it makes critical changes to its protection software which helps prevent viruses. Failing to update your computer also means that it may not run other software properly. Programs such as web browsers are designed to work with updated operating systems, and a computer that is outdated can cause crashes when using some programs.

In addition to updating your computer’s operating system, you should also update your drivers. Do this by searching for device drivers on the taskbar, which will open the device manager, which contains the drivers for all of the devices attached to your computer.

You will want to individually select it to check for updates on the most important drivers, such as your GPU, but you can also select it to scan for hardware changes. This will check for any new hardware you have added but whose drivers are not detected.

Remove Excess Software

A basic fix that many people overlook is simply cleaning up your computer. Do this by deleting old software in settings. You should also delete any other irrelevant files by deleting them in the file explorer.

Another place to check is your task manager for software that may be running in the background. Try deleting software that runs in the background but that you do not use. Also, take this time to disable unnecessary startup programs. This will greatly improve your PC’s bootup times.

Update Antivirus

If you are experiencing problems with your computer, such as crashing, you may have a virus. If you are using an antivirus program, ensure it is up to date and then run a scan of your computer.

If you do not have a paid antivirus program on your computer, Windows provides a simple security system built into Windows 10 and 11. To check this, go into settings and select Update & Security. Then, on the left sidebar, click on Windows security and select virus and threat protection on this page.

A new window will open that contains the settings for Windows built-in security. Check to ensure that it is up to date; if so, click to run a quick scan. This is not the best security software, but it should find common viruses.
Why Does My PC Keep Crashing When Playing Games?

Having your pc crash when you are in the middle of playing a game can be extremely annoying. Fortunately, there are some simple things you can do to get back up and play.

If this is your first time playing a particular game, then it may be incompatible with your computer. Video games are very intensive on your computer, and if your computer is too slow, it will crash.

Video games are also notorious for having compatibility issues with certain hardware. Before purchasing a game, you should always check a game’s minimum pc requirements. But if you did not do so, now is an excellent time to make sure your computer is capable.

If your computer is close to the minimum requirements, open the task manager and then start playing the game. If it starts to max out your GPU, CPU, or RAM, then it is likely the cause of your PC crashing.

To rectify this, check to make sure your drivers are up to date for the affected component and if they are considering replacing it. Upgrading Ram is one of the easiest changes you can make, and it will improve your gaming experience and increase your computer’s response time for daily use.

Why Does My PC Crash After a While?

If your PC crashes after using it for a while, it is likely because your ram is maxed out. A computer’s RAM is what allows you to jump between tasks quickly. When you go in and out of programs or have multiple windows open at a time, it can begin slowing your PC and will eventually cause it to crash.

Usually, you will notice your PC getting slower and slower before it crashes if RAM is at fault. To remedy this, simply turn off your computer at night. This will not only keep your RAM clear but will also improve your PC’s useful life. At a minimum, restart your computer daily, as it will clear the RAM and install any necessary updates.

Sometimes power cycling is not enough to get your computer running well again. If restarting and updates do not do the trick, it is time to upgrade your RAM. On most computers, this is a simple procedure, and RAM can even be replaced or upgraded on laptops.

What to Do Next?

A computer that keeps crashing is not only annoying, but it can greatly affect your productivity. If you find that your computer is still having problems after going through the above steps, it may be time to bring it to a repair facility or consider a replacement.

64GB Vs 128GB Vs 256GB Meta Quest 2 VR Headsets

0

Virtual reality (VR) gaming has become increasingly popular, and the Meta Quest 2 VR headset is a top choice for many enthusiasts. With its high-resolution display, 6DoF (six degrees of freedom) tracking, and wireless capabilities, the Meta Quest 2 offers an immersive VR experience. However, when it comes to storage options, there are three choices: 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. Let’s take a closer look at the differences between these options and help you determine which one might be the best fit for you.

64GB: Ideal for Casual Gamers and Light Users

If you’re a casual gamer who plans to use the VR headset sporadically and mainly for gaming, the 64GB option may be suitable for you. With 64GB of storage capacity, you’ll have enough space for a decent number of games and apps. However, it’s essential to note that VR games can be large in size, and as your library grows, you may need to manage your storage space more carefully.

The 64GB option is also ideal for light users who primarily use the VR headset for multimedia content consumption, such as watching videos or browsing VR experiences. Multimedia content generally takes up less space compared to games, so 64GB may be sufficient for these types of users.

128GB: A Balanced Choice for Most Users

The 128GB option is a popular choice for many users as it strikes a balance between storage capacity and affordability. With 128GB of storage, you’ll have ample space for a sizable collection of VR games, apps, and multimedia content. This option is suitable for most users, including casual gamers, content creators, and VR developers.

For casual gamers who enjoy playing VR games regularly, the 128GB option provides enough storage to download and store multiple games without having to worry about running out of space too quickly. Content creators and VR developers who work with VR software and apps may also benefit from the larger storage capacity as it allows them to store their creations and prototypes locally.

256GB: Ideal for Serious Gamers and VR Enthusiasts

If you’re a serious gamer or a VR enthusiast who wants to have an extensive library of VR games and multimedia content at your fingertips, the 256GB option may be the best fit for you. With 256GB of storage capacity, you’ll have ample space to download and store a large collection of VR games, apps, and multimedia content without worrying about running out of space anytime soon.

Serious gamers who play VR games frequently and require a large storage capacity for their game library will find the 256GB option beneficial. Additionally, VR enthusiasts who use their VR headset for various purposes, such as gaming, content creation, and entertainment, may also find the larger storage capacity of 256GB to be convenient and practical.

Considerations for Choosing the Right Storage Option

When choosing between the 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB options for the Meta Quest 2 VR headset, it’s important to consider your specific needs and usage patterns. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Game and App Sizes: VR games and apps can vary greatly in size, with some larger games taking up several gigabytes of storage space. Consider the size of the games and apps you plan to download and whether they will fit within your chosen storage capacity.
  • Usage Patterns: How frequently and intensively you plan to use your VR headset can impact your storage needs. If you plan to use it for gaming regularly, you may need more storage to accommodate your game library.
  • Multimedia Content: If you plan to store a significant amount of multimedia content, such as watching videos, browsing VR experiences, or creating VR content, you may need a larger storage capacity to store these files.
  • Budget: The price of the VR headset with different storage options can vary. Consider your budget and how much you’re willing to invest in a VR headset with a larger storage capacity.
  • Future-proofing: It’s also essential to think about future needs. As VR technology continues to evolve and new games and apps are released, the storage requirements may increase. Choosing a larger storage capacity now may provide room for growth in the future.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the choice of storage capacity for your Meta Quest 2 VR headset depends on your specific needs, usage patterns, budget, and future-proofing considerations. The 64GB option is suitable for casual gamers and light users, the 128GB option provides a balanced choice for most users, and the 256GB option is ideal for serious gamers and VR enthusiasts.

If you mainly use your VR headset for gaming and have a limited budget, the 64GB option may be sufficient. The 128GB option offers a good balance between storage capacity and affordability and is suitable for most users, including casual gamers, content creators, and VR developers. If you are a serious gamer, VR enthusiast, or require ample storage for multimedia content, the 256GB option may be the best fit.

Ultimately, it’s important to consider your specific needs and usage patterns, and weigh the cost versus the storage capacity to make an informed decision. With the right storage capacity, you can ensure you have enough space to store your favorite VR games, apps, and multimedia content, and enjoy an immersive and seamless VR experience with your Meta Quest 2 VR headset.

In conclusion, the storage capacity of your Meta Quest 2 VR headset plays a crucial role in determining your gaming and multimedia experience. Consider your usage patterns, budget, and future needs to make an informed decision on which storage option is the best fit for you. Whether you’re a casual gamer, content creator, serious gamer, or VR enthusiast, choosing the right storage capacity will ensure you have ample space to store your VR games, apps, and multimedia content, and enjoy an immersive and seamless VR experience with your Meta Quest 2 VR headset. Happy gaming!

Why is Sony Making a Gran Truismo Movie?

0

Sony recently released a trailer for their Gran Turismo movie which at first sight seemed pretty strange. But taking a closer look it becomes apparent that the movie has an interesting take that has never been done before. Not only are racing movies relatively rare because they can be a tad uninspiring, a sim-racing game really doesn’t lend itself to movies.

Gran Turismo remains an impressive video game that gives many gamers their first taste of sim racing. More importantly, it’s the closest that many gamers will ever get to a real race car. But what if sim racing was more than a game, what if it was a path real racing? Well that’s what we’re about to explore with the Gran Turismo movie.

Gran Turismo game cars on a track

Gran Turismo Overview

Although Sony just released a trailer for the new Gran Turismo movie, it has actually been in the works since 2013. This is incredibly surprising because of the number of games that have released since then. But this game really isn’t about any games and is more about the story of a racer.

Now that may sound confusing since you never actually see any characters in the game. More importantly, the game lacks any type of story like Gran Turismo’s competitor Forza Horizon. Therefore it seems like it will be hard to attract audiences considering there is no investment in the story.

The Real Story

If you just watched the Gran Turismo trailer you may be confused. There was little information about a story or plot and instead the game focused on speed and racing. That really is where sim racing games shine. They don’t worry about providing a plot or character backstories.

The Gran Turismo movie’s protagonist is Jahn Mardenborough who is a teenager that wants to drive race cars. He is an avid player of the Gran Turismo series and ends up playing in a series of competitions and eventually goes on to racing school to become a driver.

While the trailer doesn’t introduce any of this plot, it does promise plenty of action and a romance story as well. For racing and gaming fans this actually sounds like an ideal story that has never been told. But only time will tell if this is a story that people are interested in hearing, or if it will end up failing like so many other movies based on video games.

Release Details

There aren’t too many details about the movie right now. However, it will release in August of this year and is being developed by PlayStation Productions and Columbia Pictures. The movie’s cast has a mix of American and British actors like Orlando Bloom and David Harbour.

With about eight months until release it is very likely that Sony will release a lot more content leading up to the premiere. Most notable will probably be some added content to Gran Turismo 7 that will tie into the movie.

What is Gran Turismo?

Gran Turismo is a sim racing series on PlayStation consoles. It has been around since the 1990s and the original PlayStation. What set Gran Turismo apart from other racing franchises like Cruisin’ or Mario Kart is that it was designed as a simulated racing experience rather than an arcade racer.

Arcade racers are a ton of fun to play, but forego a realistic driving experience in favor of over the top action. Colorful karts and outlandish cars are replaced with actual race cars from major manufacturers. The tracks are also based on real race courses. Although GranTurismo is a game, it is also designed to make the player feel like they are behind the wheel of a real race car.

Will it Be Any Good?

The plot actually sounds really promising, but if you watched the 60-second trailer you probably had no idea what the story was about. Sony will need to really amp up marketing for the movie and convince theater-goers why they should see this. With that in mind, sim racing games really don’t lend themselves well to movies, but the story of a young drive may succeed in capturing movie-goers imagination.

The biggest red flag is that the movie is based on a video game. We know that Columbia Pictures can successfully make a good movie. However, movies and TV shows based on video games are notoriously bad. With previous tie-ins like The Witcher, Assassins Creed, and Hitman; it is understandable to be leery of the genre.

The biggest reason that these shows and movies tend to fail is because gamers already know what happens and they want the movie to play out like the game. But oftentimes directors and actors want to put their own spin on the project and this is where things really start to fall apart.

The good news is that Gran Turismo won’t be based on a game with an established story. This allows for plenty of creative freedom in telling a unique story that no one has heard before. Plus, the racing shots do look very impressive so it should at least be fun to watch.
